An authentic thank-you

In the spirit of the Holidays, I encourage you to take a moment to acknowledge a coworker.

Everyone wants acknowledgment for the work they do. They want to know that people notice what they do, appreciate the time and effort they expend, and value what they create.

Most companies have formal programs for acknowledgements that involve awards, certificates, or public thank yous from managers to a few selected employees. However, I believe one the most meaningful forms of acknowledgement is an authentic thank-you from a co-worker.

Take a moment to think of the people you work with. Think of all the things they do that directly contributes to making your work day easier, your projects better, or your attitude brighter. How about taking a small amount of time and giving an authentic, simple thank you to a co-worker?

An authentic thank you is one given without strings attached, without disclaimers, and without any motive of getting a thank you in return.

You can thank people personally in the hallway, give a handwritten thank you card, write an e-mail, or give them a call. It shouldn't take long, and the only intent should be to acknowledge this person. You will be giving an invaluable gift, and it is a gift that feels really good to give.
