TALENT — The former Brammo plant on West Valley View Road remains a work in progress for its new owner, engine manufacturer Cummins Inc.
The global firm based in Columbus, Indiana, followed its October 2017 acquisition of low-voltage battery-pack maker Brammo, with the January purchase of high-energy battery materials developer Johnson Matthey based in the United Kingdom.
The local operation is now known as Cummins Electrification Battery Division.
On Monday, Cummins announced it was buying Efficient Drivetrains Inc., which designs and produces powertrain technology for hybrid and fully electric power vehicles.
Cummins has 60 engineers and support staff working in Talent, said Julie Furber, who leads the company’s electrification program.
“We’re investing $500 million over three years — 2018-20 — for organic and inorganic growth in the electric field,” said Furber, reached in the Bay Area. “Some of that investment is certainly going into Oregon to grow our overall footprint there. We’ve added some resources there, shipped in some equipment, and made a few upgrades. Nothing too major yet, but it’s a little more comfortable.”
One of Brammo’s key customers was Toyota subsidiary Raymond, Corp., in Greene, New York. The relationship remains.
“We’re getting products further along and introducing them to new customers,” Furber said.
Battery packs developed for lift trucks have gone into a test vehicle in Ottawa, Canada, for a Purolator delivery vehicle.
“So far the drivers like it,” Furber said, “from a maintenance perspective, range and charging time. It’s done exactly what it said on the can.”
The universe in which the battery pack can be utilized is expanding, she said. The new acquisitions have been using different types of battery packs, but there will be the opportunity to integrate it with local technology.
“We’re close to the launch of some other products,” Furber said.
