Deadline nears for Angel investment ideas

Time is running short for entrepreneurs hoping to participate the second round of Southern Oregon Angel Network competition.

The deadline for entry for the April 11 competition is Jan. 31. "The next evening investors will sit down for dinner, cull through plans and take assignments," said founder Steve Vincent. "Entries have been trickling in, but we are making one last push for start-up companies to submit their business plans. Last year, 10 out of 30 entries came in on the final day."

At stake is a $125,000 investment prize. Folium Partners, a maker of audiobook apps in Ashland, claimed last year's $155,000 debut prize. That eventually grew to $300,000 as some new investors joined in and four original investors increased their contributions.

Added to this year's Angel Network is a "concept" competition for companies that presently are only a gleam in someone's eye. "We're looking at pre-revenue companies that maybe barely have a business plan," Vincent said. "The winning concept is valued at $7,500, including a $2,500 cash grant, in kind services from the Sustainable Valley Accelerator, entry to a boot camp for startups and professional advisers. "We're trying to create a pipeline of companies to work with in the Rogue Valley," Vincent said.

Although a tech company emerged from the pack last year, the competition can include almost any startup. "A high-tech company just happened to be the best company that presented last year," Vincent said. "But angel investors in Portland went with a dog food company and in Bend a device for horse tacks won the $225,000 prize just a couple months ago. We want to look at any and every company ready to launch a business."

To enter a submission, see and click on the "Share now" button. Supplementary material can be added after the initial entry.

Vincent said once the entry is sent, access to the information is password protected, so that only members of the angel investment committee have access to entries.
