Something worse than a giant flag

Jason Spevak argues that Ashlanders should boycott Premier West Bank because of their enormous flag (“At Length,” 6/13). Regardless of how you feel about the flag, there’s another reason to take your business elsewhere. Premier West supports animal abuse in the form of rodeos. They’re brutal, but on televised rodeos, the cameras usually cut away at the worst parts. One study found that in over half the rodeos surveyed, the animals had injuries severe enough to require veterinary care (Doubtless there were others with less apparent internal injuries). Rodeos use flank straps, spurs, electric prods, sharp sticks, and caustic ointments to make otherwise docile animals act wild.

Cesar Chavez said, “Racism, economic deprival, dog fighting and cock fighting, bullfighting and rodeos are cut from the same fabric: violence.”

If you’ve already opened an account there, please close it and tell them you don’t support animal abuse.

If Premier West Bank doesn’t stop promoting cruelty to animals; let them pull up stakes for want of business, just like the McDonald’s that abandoned their location. This is Ashland. Show them we don’t cotton to cruelty.

Fasting on the fourth

I will not be walking in the parade as I have done multiple times since 1985. I will not be working on a float. Nor will I be cheering from the sidelines, attending a celebratory barbecue, or meeting friends to watch fireworks.

This year I’m joining folks around the country who are fasting on July 4. I’m giving myself this day to feeling the full grief of knowing that the government I support with my tax dollars is terrorizing and killing innocent civilians in Iraq. I will mourn that our leaders are motivated by greed for power and wealth; that they have abandoned moral integrity as well as their responsibility toward American military personnel and civilians, and our civil liberties, in order to establish a permanent U.S. fortress in Iraq.

As I feel sorrow and hunger, I will remember my fellow citizens who lack health care and shelter. I will keep in my heart the plummeting standards in education and public transportation. I will weep for our vanishing forests and polluted skies and oceans, victims of exploitation by our federal government and colluding large corporations.

I’ll be in good company. Some well knowns that have committed to fasting are: Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, Alice Walker, Daniel Ellsberg, and Michael Franti. For more information go to <www.troopshomefast.org>.
