Kiwanis One Day was a big success

Saturday, April 2, marked the fourth annual observation of Kiwanis One Day, a day when Kiwanis and its family of clubs joined forces with their communities for a day of hands-on service.

This year, as we did last year, Ashland Kiwanis teamed up with Friends of the Animal Shelter to sponsor "Pooches on the Plaza," a fundraiser to support the Jackson County Animal Shelter. This year a total of nearly $330 was raised to help buy toys and supplies for puppies at the new "Puppy Place." In addition to raising funds, the event was also designed to help educate the public about the volunteer organization of FOTAS and its relationship with the Jackson County Animal Shelter.

Kiwanis sends a big thank you to the general public for their generosity on this special day. We also send a big thank you to the Jabberwocky Band for the entertainment they provided.

Homeless rally was alarming

After viewing the homeless rally meandering down Mountain Avenue on Tuesday I was amused and alarmed that of all the wants/demands they were hollering for, not one of them was for a job.

Chicken article didn't mention rats

In HomeLife magazine for April 2011, the article on city chickens states that roosters are not allowed in Ashland, but I hear one crowing in the wee hours all the time.

In addition, there is no mention of the attraction to rats when one raises chickens. I find it necessary to give up feeding wild birds due to this annoyance.
