The power of change

Power is never static. Water sitting still in a like is not powerful. Power requires movement and change. Water rushing through a hydroelectric turbine is very powerful. This rule applies to any kind of power one can imagine. In each case, the power is being wrought by change. The same is true of your own life and business. Consultants and gurus of all descriptions all agree on one thing: If you want different results, change what you are currently doing.

You are literally not the same person you were yesterday. Virtually all of the cells in your body get replaced at least once during your lifetime and many get replaced far more often than that. Your body is what Buckminster Fuller referred to as a "pattern continuity" in which succeeding generations of cells grow, flourish, and die in a pattern that keeps your outward and inward appearances remarkably consistent over time. You are the living embodiment of the line from the movie The Shawshank Redemption that exhorts us to "get busy living or get busy dying." The moment you stop growing is the moment that your time on this planet as we know it will end.

Our bodies seem to know what our minds seem unwilling to grasp: That change is not only good, it's vital for life itself. Think about it: Your body is hard at work renewing itself every moment of every day, but when is the last time that your beliefs and feelings exhibited such flexibility? My guess is that the changes in your life probably occurred only when the pain of inaction became stronger than the fear and/or pain of change.

I've said this before but it bears repeating: Just because you've done something a certain way in the past does not mean that your way is the best possible way. Also, just because you've been doing something doesn't mean that continuing that activity is in your best interests.

Give yourself the freedom to exercise your power by reviewing every thing you in your business and indeed your entire life. How can you make your business even more efficient and effective at what it does than it currently is? How can you achieve the same or better results with less effort? What are your strengths and how can you leverage them to best advantage? What are your weaknesses and how can you compensate for them? What beliefs or patterns do you have that may be limiting your success?

I'm not asking you to stop everything you're doing and make a 180-degree turn because that drastic a change would last about a week, tops. But I'm willing to bet that you can reduce your schedule by 1%. I'm also willing to bet that you can find a way to consistently increase your profits by 1%. Most importantly, I'm willing to bet that all you need to do is to exercise a tiny bit of power by making a miniscule change.

1% may not sound like much. Shaving 1% off a 40-hour workweek will save you 24 minutes per week. That's not much until you consider that those 24 minutes add up to just over 20 hours- almost an entire day- per year. What could you do with an extra day per year? If your annual business profit is $100,000 then a 1% increase means $1,000 more in your pocket every year. I don't know about you, but I could have one heck of a lot of fun in one day with an extra $1,000 to throw around. Even better, finding that 1% may just inspire you find 2%, or 3%, or 4%, or more.

Don't try for too much too quickly. Focus on finding that first 1% and get used to that tiny boost before going further. You'll find that gradual change is much easier to implement and maintain than anything drastic.

The key word here is change. Every single one of us has a huge lake of potential inside ourselves that cannot and will not be released unless and until we decide to make a change. Change is power. There is no power, maturation, or benefit to resisting healthy change.
