California marijuana legalization looks unlikely in early returns

California voters were rejecting the legalization of recreational marijuana in early returns tonight.

With 5 percent of the vote in, Proposition 19, which would make it legal for adults over 21 to possess up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use and to grow pot gardens up to 25 acres, was tracking toward defeat with a 57 percent no vote.

Latin American presidents, many law enforcement and the medical marijuana trade have denounced the measure as increasing drug addiction and attendant social ills, including crime.

Supporters hail from a hodgepodge of interests, including the Service Employees International Union and some law enforcement officials who argue legalizing pot would undermine the illegal drug trade, create jobs and generate tax revenue.
