New members, commissioners to take office

Newly elected Ashland City Council members and Ashland Parks and Recreation commissioners will be sworn in on Tuesday, Jan. 4, and the mayor's annual State of the City address will follow.

Self-employed contractor Michael Morris, who defeated Councilor Eric Navickas on Nov. 2, will take office, along with Dennis Slattery, a Southern Oregon University business professor, who won the seat being vacated by Councilor Kate Jackson. She did not seek re-election.

Former Parks Commissioner Rick Landt will return for a second stint after beating out Parks Commissioner Mike Gardiner. Stefani Seffinger won the seat being vacated by Parks Commissioner Melody Noraas, who did not seek re-election.

The swearing-in ceremony begins at 6:45 p.m. in the Ashland Civic Center Council Chambers, 1175 E. Main St.

During the regular City Council meeting that follows at 7 p.m., Mayor John Stromberg will follow Ashland tradition and give the annual State of the City Address.

Other agenda items on Tuesday include declaring Saturday as Christmas Tree Recycle Day. Residents will be urged to put their trees out on the curb on Friday night for Saturday pick-up.

The council will consider whether to form an Ashland Fiber Network Executive Advisory Group to help guide the city's telecommunications service, and whether to form a Firewise Commission to help Ashland neighborhoods take precautions against damage from wildfires.
