AHS Chamber Orchestra best in region

The Ashland High School Chamber Orchestra took top honors for the Skyline Conference at the Southern Oregon Regional Orchestra Festival in Grants Pass on Wednesday.

Each orchestra in the competition played several pieces and was adjudicated by three judges. The adjudication process looks at such things as technique, quality of sound, musicality and appearance.

"The venue was superb," said Gerry Paré, director of orchestras for AHS. "Acoustics were awesome and the place was packed. What a great feeling to walk out and have a full house. Needless to say, both orchestras played very well."

After playing, one of the judges came up on stage and talked and worked with the AHS orchestra for 10 to 15 minutes. The group received many favorable comments and also got ideas on how to improve performances as an orchestra, Paré said.

After the performance the group had the opportunity to hear orchestras from Klamath Falls, Grants Pass and Medford. At the end of the day the judges tallied all the results and determined a winner from each conference.

The orchestra will represent the Skyline Conference on May 15 at the OSAA State Orchestra Championships in Corvallis at Oregon State University.
