Free backpacks filled with basic school supplies will be given to anyone who needs them starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at South Valley Community Human Services Center, 1658 Ashland St., in the Ashland Shopping Center.
The seventh-annual event is sponsored by a group called the Love Ashland Network (LAN). School starts soon, and parents are helping their children to round up required school supplies, LAN said in a press release, adding that, for some families, the added expense for these items can be prohibitive or impossible.
The free backpacks and supplies, valued at $20, contain notebooks, paper, pens, erasers, pencil pouches and other items suitable for students grades K-8. All the items are brand new. Any student may receive a backpack, there are no applications, and anyone in need is eligible. One hundred-fifty backpacks are available, so its best to arrive early.
Established in 2008, LAN is a group of anonymous Ashlanders concerned about the well-being of low-income residents of the community. LAN thanks their seven-year partner, South Valley Human Services, for their support with this event.
