Kai Dowding named Kiwanis student of the month

The Kiwanis Club of Ashland recognized Kai Dowding as its student of the month for October. Dowding is the daughter of Krista Verton and Kent Dowding.

Academically, Dowding has taken five Advanced Placement classes, including english composition, government, literature, environmental science, and calculus. She has received honors for geometry, advanced algebra 2, and pre-calculus. She is a National Honor Society award winner, Math Honor Society, and student of the year in global studies and Spanish 2. Dowding is maintaining a 4.00 cumulative GPA.

Dowding is a member of the AHS Key Club, the Knitwits (a knitting group), and the Interact Service club. She is also active in other service-oriented activities, including Relay for Life, Fresh Start Counselor for incoming freshmen, and she was an Ashland Runway contestant.

Dowding has won awards for principal French horn and principal clarinet in Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon. She was also honored to be on the Oregon All-State Honor Band, and she was an Oregon Ambassadors of Music honoree. Dowding has been on the AHS Pep Band four years, AHS Symphonic Band four years, AHS Pit Orchestra, and Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon. She attended the Western International Band Clinic, has been the band co-librarian, and she is the keyboardist for the rock band "Turpentine."

Dowding is considering taking a year off before college. She is contemplating a year of community service in South America to work on various volunteer projects.

A senior student from the Ashland High School is honored each month during the school year. Each student of the month receives an award certificate and a $100 savings bond. During the month of May, 2011, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with a $1,000 college scholarship.
