Kiwanis honors Ryan Mills

The Kiwanis Club of Ashland has recognized Ryan Mills as its April 2011 Student of the Month. Mills is the son of Andrew and Leslie Mills.

Mills has taken various AP courses during his high school career, including the social studies areas of U. S. history and American government. He has also chosen to schedule mathematics and Spanish all four years. His cumulative GPA is 3.8.

Mills has participated four years on the speech and debate team, and was co-captain last year. In this role, Mills accumulated numerous awards, including state accolades. He has also worked with younger students to teach proper debate procedures.

While a student, Mills was the president of the Interact Club, was a participant in high school theatre, participated on the Brain Bowl, and was a member of the Poetry Club. He also raised more than $500 for the prenatal unit at the Children's Hospital in Medford. Mills is also a writer, and contributes often to the AHS newspaper, The Rogue News.

Mills loves music and he may major in business at the University of Oregon, with an eye toward music production. He may also add philosophy as another study area.

A senior student from Ashland High School is honored each month during the school year.

Each Student of the Month receives an award certificate and a $100 savings bond. During the month of May, 2011, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with a $1,000 college scholarship. This is called the "Tommy Laird Kiwanis Scholarship."
