Kiwanis names Sheralyn Shumway student of the month

Ashland Kiwanis has named Sheralyn Shumway as its student of the month for March. Shumway is the daughter of Wendy and Scott Shumway.

Shumway was home-schooled through the eighth grade, and found it to be a rewarding and unique experience. She came to Ashland High School as a freshman and was eager to attend her first public school.

Shumway has held a job of some sort since she was 12. Some of the work included yard maintenance jobs such as irrigation, mowing and caring for orchards and vineyards. She has also been a caregiver for the elderly and she has been a house maid. Currently, she is a certified lifeguard and swim instructor at the YMCA and an assistant coach of the Superior Stingray Swim team.

Shumway's cumulative GPA is 3.75. She has held several leadership positions during her four-year AHS career, including team captain of the AHS swim team, president of the Knit Wits Club, seminary class president, and she has served in numerous callings at her church.

Shumway has a passion for swimming, music, and art. She plays the piano and the harp. She holds two school records in swimming. She also enjoys sewing, knitting and crafting items from wood.

Shumway's future plans include obtaining a college degree in elementary education from Brigham Young University in Idaho.

A senior student from the Ashland High School is honored each month during the school year. Each Student of the Month receives an award certificate and $50 in cash. In May, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will receive a $1,000 Tommy Laird Kiwanis College Scholarship.
