Ashland High School student Rachel Kambury is the May 2009 Kiwanis Student of the Month.
Kambury has participated in many school activities during her AHS career, including Fresh Start counselor, advanced French film seminar, Mock Trial, AHS Redesign Team, OSF Green Show volunteer (3 summers, 120 hours each summer), and Rogue News writer.
In addition to school activities, Rachel has been a writer for many year, starting at age 5, according to her father. She has written seven novels and published one of them. She recently published "Gravel," a novel about a paratrooper in WWII.
While participating in these school and writing activities, Rachel has maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.453.
Following graduation, in September Kambury will attend Eugene Lang College in New York, N.Y., with a focus on creative writing, literature, and history.
The Student of the Month receives an award certificate and a $50 savings bond. During the month of May, 2009, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with a $1,000 college scholarship. This is called the Tommy Laird Kiwanis Scholarship.
