Leland Owens-Oas named Kiwanis Student of the Month

The Kiwanis Club of Ashland has named Leland Owens-Oas as its September Student of the Month. Owens-Oas is the son of Lyn Owens and David Oas.

Owens-Oas has taken various advanced placement courses during his high school career, including U.S. history, government, environmental science, human geography, literature, and calculus. He has received honors for geometry, advanced algebra 2, and pre-calculus. Owens-Oas also received awards for National Merit Scholarship and the Math Honor Society. He also received an AP scholarship designation and he was on the Academic Challenge Team. Owens-Oas is maintaining a 4.00 cumulative GPA.

Owens-Oas has been a member of the Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), the Math Team, the Interact Service club, the Jazz Club, the Bowling Team, and he is a bass player for the rock bank "Turpentine." Owens-Oas also volunteers at a food bank, and he has been an active participant on the annual Relay for Life teams.

He has taken on various leadership roles, including Fresh Start Counselor for incoming freshmen, co-president of Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society), secretary of the Interact club, and co-president of the SADD club.

Owens-Oas enjoys music and is the bass player for a rock band, and he has taken private guitar lessons for six years.

Owens-Oas has applied to Pomona College to begin his undergraduate work. He is undecided about his possible career choice at this time.

A senior student from the Ashland High School is honored each month during the school year. Each Student of the Month receives an award certificate and a $100 savings bond. During the month of May two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with a $1,000 college scholarship. This is called the "Tommy Laird Kiwanis Scholarship".
