OLLI seeks instructors to expand offerings

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Southern Oregon University invites community adults to join its volunteer faculty for the spring academic year.

Through a diverse program of 100-plus peer-taught courses each quarter, OLLI at SOU provides mental stimulation and social connection for 2,000 Rogue Valley adults, typically aged 50-plus.

The ever-changing faculty and course variety is at the heart of the OLLI experience. Through a balanced mix of new and returning instructors, OLLI encourages a variety of teaching styles and formats. Course offerings include lively academic lectures; facilitated discussions of art, books or films; hands-on skills development; personal development; and physical activities. To see examples of OLLI course offerings, visit the “Take Classes” link at inside.sou.edu/olli.

OLLI instructors do not need to be OLLI members, hold a particular degree, or have prior teaching experience. The organization also offers support and training for new and returning instructors, including in-house IT support for classroom equipment.

Invariably, OLLI instructors discover that teaching their peers is a rich and rewarding experience, OLLI said in a statement, and teaching provides instructors with a unique opportunity to deepen and refresh their knowledge of their chosen subject matter.

OLLI courses consist of between two to 10 weekly class sessions that are 90 to 120 minutes in length. Classes can start and stop at any time during the term and can be scheduled at the SOU Campbell Center campus in Ashland, the RCC/SOU Higher Education Center in Medford, and other satellite locations. There are no tests or papers to grade.

Course proposals for the spring term that runs April 1 through June 7 are due Monday, Dec. 31. For more information on becoming an OLLI faculty member, visit the “Teaching at OLLI” link at inside.sou.edu/olli or call 541-552-6048.

OLLI also invites community adults of all ages to join its learning community. Members who join now can take as many classes as can be scheduled from Jan. 7 through June 7 for $125, with no additional per-course tuition.

For more information about OLLI memberships, visit the “Join OLLI” link at inside.sou.edu/olli or call 541-552-6048.
