Fuller, Sanderson lead Ashland past Springfield

Peyton Fuller delivered a two-run single in Ashland’s five-run first and Nick Sanderson belted a three-run home run in the second as the Grizzlies thumped Springifield 9-2 in Midwestern League baseball action Thursday at Springfield.

Fuller came through with a bases-loaded hit to left after Springfield starting pitcher Jake O’Grady walked the game’s first three batters and hit the fourth.

In the second, Sanderson came up with one out and two on and smashed 2-2 pitch over the wall in left-center to give the Grizzlies an 8-0 lead.

That proved to be plenty for Fuller, Sanderson and Jesse Carroll, who combined to hold the Millers to two runs on four hits. Fuller allowed one run and struck out four in four innings of work, and Sanderson held Springfield scoreless on one hit in two innings.

Sanderson and Shea Scott had two hits apiece for the Grizzlies (10-6, 7-6 MWL), with Scott scoring three runs and smacking a double and Sanderson driving in four and scoring twice.

Kobey Basom had two hits for the Millers (2-14-1, 0-13), who have lost 10 straight.
