At Eugene, North Eugene’s stars stepped up to lead the Highlanders to a crucial Midwestern League victory in girls soccer action Thursday at North Eugene High School.
Jordan Wormdahl scored in the 34th minute and Brittany Smith tallied an insurance goal in the 75th as North Eugene beat Ashland 2-0 to grab sole possession of first place in the conference with two regular-season games to go.
Smith sent a diagonal ball to Wormdahl to set up the first goal, and Wormdahl finished from about 12 yards out to give the Highlanders (10-1, 5-0 MWL) a 1-0 lead at the break.
North Eugene got some insurance with five minutes to go in the game when Smith received a pass near the top of the box, turned and ripped a shot past Ashland’s keeper.
The loss snapped the Grizzlies’ five-match winning streak, dropping them to 8-2-1 overall and 4-1 in league play.
