Southern Oregon senior guard Remi Mejia found her shooting touch during an arduous road trip and was rewarded on Monday as the Cascade Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
Mejia, a South Medford product and transfer from Portland State, started the trip with a career-high 21 points in SOU's 79-53 win Wednesday at Linfield, shooting 9-of-13 overall. On Friday at The Master's Classic in Santa Clarita, Calif., she topped that effort with 26 points and six 3-pointers in a 93-87 win against Hope International (Calif.). And against No. 18 The Master's on Saturday, she helped the Raiders stay perfect with 24 more points in a 78-70 win.
Mejia went 12 of 24 on 3-pointers on the trip after going 3 of 22 in SOU's first four games. Her scoring average went from 10 points per game to 15.9 as a result. She also averaged five rebounds and collected eight steals during the swing.
The Raiders, ranked 15th in the NAIA Division II preseason poll, will start Cascade Conference play at home this weekend with a 7-0 record. They play No. 7 Eastern Oregon (6-2) on Saturday and The College of Idaho (0-6) on Sunday, tipping off at 4 p.m. both days.
