Southern Oregon ranked 11th in NAIA Directors’ Cup standings after winter

ASHLAND — Southern Oregon University will enter the spring championship season in 11th place in the NAIA’s Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, the latest edition of which was released Thursday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
Designed to measure an athletic department’s overall national performance, points for the standings are awarded based on finishes at NAIA Championship events. SOU was in second place with 248 points after the fall season and tacked on 176 in the winter by scoring at three national tournaments.
The SOU women’s indoor track and field team led the way with 64.5 points by placing 12th at the NAIA Indoor Championships. The men’s wrestling team scored 58.5 points, finishing 16th at the NAIA Championships. And the Raider women’s basketball team ended its 28-5 season among the final 16 teams at the NAIA Division II Tournament to pick up 53 points.
SOU finished 13th in the 2016-17 Directors’ Cup standings. The Raiders’ sixth-place finish in 2014-15 and eighth-place finish in 2015-16 stand as the best showings in Cascade Conference history.
The College of Idaho leads all CCC teams in fifth place overall with 481.5 points, and Carroll (Mont.) is the top Frontier Conference team in 34th place with 235. Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) has the No. 1 overall spot, scoring 643.5 points.
