YMCA kids volunteer at food bank

Fourteen kindergarten through fifth graders from the Ashland Family YMCA visited the Ashland Emergency Food Bank on Jan. 18, learning about how it operates and helps the community before spending a few hours volunteering.

The children were split into three teams, with each team challenged with figuring out how its station could best perform tasks such as bagging beans and rice and stocking shelves. The kids formed assembly lines and learned about teamwork, said YMCA communications director Michele Mitzel.

After the work was done the kids reflected on their afternoon of service, which also included organizing peanut butter and breaking down boxes.
