The ditch

We lived in another city and saw first-hand what happened when the open ditch was piped. Get ready for considerable die-off of trees and shrubs along the waterway.

This leads to decline of birds and other animals accustomed to sheltering and drinking, reduced moisture in the air and general quality of life that comes from being near water. The loss of trees adds to heat, lower air quality, and possibly is counter-productive to the stated benefit of saving water.
