'Quilt: A Musical Celebration'

The Oregon Conservatory of Performing Arts' Magic of Theatre summer camp will perform "Quilt: A Musical Celebration."

Directed by Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Caroline Shaffer, the play will be presented at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Ashland High School's Mountain Avenue Theatre, Ashland.

"'Quilt' represents OCPA's strongest commitment yet to both inform and stimulate discussion about social issues through theatre," says Jeff Tabler, OCPA's executive director.

"Quilt" is a series of stories for, from, and about the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, which has been called "the most powerful piece of spontaneous art ever created."

The play is made up from individual stories that center around prejudice, intolerance, and AIDS as well as personal growth and realization. The vignettes in the play are threaded together by a volunteer's experience while making a quilt panel in memory of a friend. With songs and monologues "Quilt" commemorates those lost to AIDS and those of us left behind.

A block of the original Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display at the Rogue Gallery in Medford the week of Aug. 20. OCPA also is raffling off four locally made quilts to raise money for this project. Actors have been making their own quilt patches, which will be used in the show.

The 12' by 12' blocks of the Names Quilt now number 5,771. Each block typically contains eight individual panels, for roughly 46,000 panels and 84,000 names. These numbers represent only a fraction of those who have succumbed to the disease.

The block on display at the Rogue Gallery is composed of panels from panel makers in the Northwest, mostly Oregon.

The production of "Quilt" marks the first time OCPA students ages 13 to 17, will perform on-stage with adult actors, who will mentor the students as part of the cast.

Tickets to "Quilt" are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and children 12 and under. Tickets are available at Musichead, Medford; and Music Coop, Ashland. See or call 776-9118.

The cast of Quilt also will perform on Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Elizabethan stage as part of OSF's Daedalus Project variety show on Monday, Aug. 20.
