CHINESE NEW YEAR: Artist Zhi Lin, who teaches painting and drawing at the University of Washington, will present a free lecture about his work and life experiences growing up during Mao's Cultural Revolution at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Southern Oregon University Schneider Museum of Art, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. ashland author to perform: Darrell Kastin, Ashland author and musician of Azorean descent, will discuss and read from his recently published novel, "The Undiscovered Island." The mystery, interlaced with poetry, legend and historical intrigue, is set in the Azores islands. The free program will include a performance of music composed by the author for Portuguese poetry. AUTHOR, AUTHOR!: Bloomsbury Books, 290 E. Main St., Ashland, has scheduled award-winning playwright Victor Lodato to read from his debut novel "Mathilda Savitch." A year after the mysterious death of her sister Helene, 13-year-old Mathilda is on the trail of the killer. Unsupported by her dysfunctional family, precocious Mathilda lives in an elaborate world of her own invented logic as she attempts to overcome tragedy. SOUPER ART: Ashland restaurants Tabu and Pasta Piatti will be serving bowls of hearty black bean-chorizo soup and tortillas on the Ashland Plaza (look for canopy tents) during Ashland's First Friday Art Walk on Feb. 5 between 5 and 8:30 p.m. The suggested donation of $5 per bowl (children under 12 years free) will be used to fund completion of the Ashland Peace Wall, a community art work located in front of the Ashland library. Saturday ScienceLive!: ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum, 1500 E. Main St., Ashland, is enhancing its year-round exhibits with the addition of live science shows on Saturdays:
- Feb. 6 — Star Lab at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Learn about the stars and constellations visible in our night sky. Admission is $1.
- Feb. 13 — Zapped! at 1 p.m. with Elib. This "shocking" demonstration explains how electricity behaves in the universe and can be a "hair-raising" experience.
- Feb. 27 — Magic or Science? at 1 p.m. with Elib. Figure out the magic tricks of the museum's resident magician by using scientific methods.
