The Ashland boys and girls water polo teams each lost to Cottage Grove in their respective opening district tournament contests, but rebounded with victories in their third place matches over the weekend to get into the Class 5A state tournament.
After getting edged by Cottage Grove 13-10 in the its first game, the Ashland boys romped past Sheldon 17-7 to earn third place.
Andrew Cataldo had seven goals in the win with Rafferty Swink and Jake Gavin pitching in with three apiece. Cataldo added five in Ashland's loss and goalie Tucker Bacon made a combined 16 saves.
The Ashland girls turned around to hand North Eugene a 10-7 defeat after getting being topped by Cottage Grove 13-7.
Allison Gida tallied four goals in each contest for the Grizzlies and Natalie Del Carlo totaled four over the weekend. Carlee Santee registered 10 saves in both matches for the Grizzlies.
The state tournament will take place on Friday and Saturday in Corvallis.
At Portland, the Southern Oregon University volleyball team needed just over an hour to dispatch Warner Pacific, 30-24, 30-13, 30-14 in a Cascade Conference match Saturday.
The Raiders have now won 16 straight matches and improved to 15-1 in conference play.
Warner Pacific was doomed by 31 hitting errors, while SOU committed just seven for the match.
