Built to Spill at Ashland Armory

Three and a half years in the making, the efforts of writing and recording "There Is No Enemy" (2009 WEA/Reprise) led Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch to wonder whether he would make another album.

Martsch has been writing and recording music for more than 20 years. His strong aesthetic combines with Built to Spill members' mix of approaches. Martsch sets the course and each member — Brett Nelson (bass), Scott Plouf (drums), Jim Roth (guitar) and Brett Netson (guitar) — brings a different set of expectations and ideals. The result is complexity and variety in the band's music.

Built to Spill will perform at 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St.

Built to Spill is an indie band Martsch formed when he left Treepeople in 1992. It was his intention to be the only permanent member, introducing new musicians to the band for each album. However, the lineup has remained the same over the course of six studio albums. The series of albums began with 1993's "Ultimate Alternative Wavers," and by the release of its third album, "Perfect From Now On" (1997 Warner Bros./WEA) — the band's first for a major label — the group received significant critical praise.
