Hubbard Street Dance Chicago performs at Britt

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will perform at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at the Britt Festivals, Jacksonville. The contemporary dance company is celebrating more than 30 years, performing annually for more than 100,000 people.

HSDC is known for its exuberant, athletic and innovative repertoire and performs works by a number of gifted choreographers.

Within a decade of founding the company in 1977, Lou Conte began to attract nationally-known choreographers, as well as identifying company members to create and set dances on HSDC. Beginning in 1990, Twyla Tharp established an in-depth relationship with the company by setting seven of her works during the next five years.

HSDC is now under the leadership of artistic director Jim Vincent and continues to expand its diverse repertoire with work by leading national and international choreographers. The company also contributes to the art form's evolution by developing new choreographic talent and collaborating with artists in music, visual art and theater.

In January 2004, HSDC joined forces with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for an engagement conducted by Pinchas Zukerman. The success of this debut collaboration has resulted in an ongoing relationship, including annual engagements with the CSO, which has created far-reaching artistic and institutional opportunities. Other recent and unique orchestral collaborations have included performances in Canada with the National Arts Centre Orchestra Ottawa and at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Vincent also has begun working on projects involving live music spanning a broad spectrum of musical styles and genres, such as contemporary chamber music and jazz.

HSDC performs in downtown Chicago and the metropolitan area and also tours throughout the year. The company has appeared nationally and internationally at celebrated dance venues in the United States and abroad. Last year, HSDC made its Russian debut at the Moscow International Contemporary Dance Festival DANCEINVERSION. The company has presented cutting-edge dance programs at universities around the country.

The Washington Post said of the company's performances, "Take a deep breath because Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is going to take your breath away."
