Looking for young theater campers

With summer vacation just around the corner, Ashland Children's Theatre is gearing up for its Incredible Instant Theatre at Oregon Stage Works, 185 A St. in Ashland.

The theater group offers a variety of camps for children ages 4 to 17, ranging from improvisation and musical theater to fairy-tale theatre. Campers will participate in a culmination performance for family and friends on the last day of camp.

Fairy Tale Theatre Camp is a two-week performance camp for youth ages 10-16 culminating in a public performance 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11. The camp will explore the fairy tale genre, characters, locations and styles. What would "Little Red riding Hood" be like as a western? Or what if the three little pigs were the villains and the wolf saved the day? This is a camp

In Make Believe Explorers, 4- to 6-year-olds will get a sample of theatre craft and puppets and learn to create stories on the spot. Imagination Travelers, for 6-8 year olds, includes improvisational games, make-up day and creating a short play.

In Spontaneous Superstars, 9-11 year olds will enjoy a day of stage combat, a bit of Shakespeare and monologue writing as they further develop their improvisational skills.

Teen Prov, a camp for ages 12-17, has young people thinking on their feet as they play performance improvisational games like "Taxi" and "Half Life."

Intro to Musical Theatre, taught by Laura Derocher, is designed for young actors ages 9-16 new to the musical theatre experience. Campers will learn the basics of musical theatre, singing, movement and how to "sell" a song.

In More Musical Theatre, those already bitten by the musical theatre bug can further develop their skills and receive expert coaching in a two week camp rather than a full-summer show.

Improviser, actor, teacher and Ashland Children's Theatre co-director, Eve Smyth will lead the improv-based camps. Smyth trained and worked with B.A.T.S. Improv in San Francisco, performs with local improvisational comedy troupe, The Hamazons, and is an Oregon Shakespeare Festival company member.

Musical theatre teacher, Laura Derocher has more than 30 years of experience as a musical-theater actress. She has performed lead roles in Chicago, Santa Fe and the Rogue Valley. She was music director for Ashland Middle School's recent production, "Into the Wood" and teaches both private and group voice lessons.

Camp prices range from $45 to $330. See oregonstageworks.org or call 482-2334, Ext. 2.
