The Siskiyou Institute will present the Grammy-nominated group Oregon at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, at the Mountain Avenue Theatre at Ashland High School, 201 S. Mountain Ave., Ashland. This event will raise funds for the Siskiyou Institute's Artists In The Schools Program.
For more than 35 years this American quartet has been making music without boundaries, an adventurous fusion of jazz, chamber atmospheres, and folkloristic scents coming from various latitudes and longitudes. Composition and improvisation find the right balance. Oregon features Ralph Towner on guitar and piano, Paul McCandless on reeds and woodwinds, Glen Moore on bass and Mark Walker on drums and percussion. Oregon has set the standard for acoustic chamber music that straddles the lines between jazz, world music and classical. The group's sound builds upon European classical disciplines and American jazz traditions, transcending them both.
Oregon has performed for audiences in concert halls including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Berlin Philharmonic Hall, and Vienna's Mozartsaal; at international jazz clubs and major festivals such as Montreux, Pori, Berlin, Montreal and Newport Jazz; and on tours throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, South America, Eastern and Western Europe, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Algeria and Australia. The group has also composed and recorded music for two plays for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Members of Oregon will be teaching workshops for students of Southern Oregon University and Ashland High School and Middle School at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29. These workshops are part of the Siskiyou Institute's Artists in the Schools Program and are presented in collaboration with the Southern Oregon University and the Ashland High School music departments. This program began in 2006 in Ashland and continues to expand into other schools in the Rogue Valley. It brings in guest artists who are performing in the Siskiyou Institute's concert series to lead workshops and master classes at local schools during their visit to the Rogue Valley. The program also recruits artists from the music teachers/performers in our local area to provide year-round program opportunities.
Tickets to the concert are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and $15 with student I.D.
Tickets for the Mountain Avenue concert are available at CD or Not CD in Ashland or can be ordered by calling 488-3869.
