Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon: Youth Symphony and Youth Orchestra, conducted by Cynthia Hutton, kick off their Spring Concert Series with a show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 18, in the Music Recital Hall, 405 S. Mountain Ave., at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. Additional concerts are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19, in the Performing Arts Center, 830 N.E. Ninth St., Grants Pass, and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford. Rogue Valley Symphony’s Family Concert: The symphony, directed by Martin Majkut, will present “Uzu and Muzu from Kakaruzu,” by composer Avner Dorman, at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, in the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford. Dorman’s piece was written to accompany an original story by Efrain Sidon, known as “Dr. Seuss of Israel” for his humorous treatment of words and serious subjects. The symphony will be joined by percussionists Haruka Fujii and Luke Rinderknecht. Robin Downward of Randall Theatre will narrate.
