Playwright jazz night

The dynamic duo of Larry Cavalier on vibraharp and Bil Leonhart on seven-string guitar will play instrumental jazz at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at The Playwright Public House, 258 A St., Ashland. (Cavalier is filling in for classical guitarist Cyd Smith, who typically performs with Leonhart as HartSmith two Sundays each month at the pub.)

Leonhart and Cavalier, "a thinking man's musician," use the skeleton of classic jazz standards by Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, Miles Davis and others to compose original melodies.

"The tune is the vehicle for our compositions," says Leonhart. "George Gershwin wrote a particular set of chord changes, and we'll honor that structure, but ... we'll add our own variations."

There is no cover to the duo's show at The Playwright. Call 541-488-9128.
