Sol Flamenco at CultureWorks

Sol Flamenco will showcase traditional and contemporary Spanish songs and dances at 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at CultureWorks, 310 Oak St., Ashland.

Flamenco largely is influenced by the Gypsies, Jews and Moors who lived on Europe's Iberian Peninsula in the eighth through 16th centuries. While the art form has evolved over centuries, its passionate traditions remain.

The California-based troupe features guitarists Geoff Hawkins and Mark Taylor and dancers Pamela Martinez, Liz Bortolotto and Joelle Gonçalves, as well as many guest artists, including guitarist Grant Ruiz and percussionist Terry Longshore, who often accompany the troupe for its Rogue Valley performances. Each of the dancers and musicians studied in Spain.

Flamenco dance is characterized by precise, rhythmic footwork, graceful arm movements and emotional intensity. Flamenco guitar, although similar to classical guitar, focuses more on rhythm and percussiveness.

The cover at CultureWorks is $10. Call 541-488-4888.
