AHS wrestler Adler still alive at state meet

Ashland junior 182-pounder Zach Adler won two matches and advanced to the consolation quarterfinals in the first day of the OSAA Class 5A state wrestling championships Friday at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Ashland 170-pound senior Cedar Barnes won one consolation match before being eliminated, while senior Jerrod Reichert (126) and sophomore Trevor Fulton (160) both went two-and-out Friday.

Adler, seeded eighth, pinned Ian Locke of Wilsonville in 1 minute, 25 seconds in the first round to earn a quarterfinal match with top-seeded Tanner Sallee of Lebanon. Sallee pinned Adler in 2:23.

Adler pinned John Crivellone of Redmond in the second round of the 182-pound consolation bracket to earn a rematch with Locke. The consolation champion will earn the third-place trophy.

Barnes was pinned by seventh-seeded Julio Leiva of Hermiston in the opening round, then beat Jacob Stelle of Wilsonville in a 12-8 decision. Barnes’ trophy hopes were dashed when he was pinned by eighth-seeded Karson Christiensen of Woodburn in 1:58.

Reichert was pinned by second-seeded Bryant Smith of Milwaukie in 2:35 and by Cody Edelbut of Mountain View in 2:14.

Fulton dropped a 19-5 major decision to fifth-seeded Frankie Lesowski of Mountain View, and suffered a technical fall (15-0) at the hands of Devon Floyd of Dallas in 4:53.

Girls Basketball


At Eugene, Mikayla Titus had seven points, three rebounds and three assists for Ashland, which suffered a 71-21 Midwestern League loss to Marist on Friday.

The Grizzlies (5-17, 2-12 MWL) trailed 23-4 after the first quarter against the Spartans (18-5, 13-1), who had already clinched the MWL championship.

Ashland finished its season seventh in the eight-team conference.

Boys Basketball

At Eugene, Marist beat Ashland 52-41 in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Ashland finished the year tied with Crater for sixth place in the Midwestern League, but owned the tiebreaker to seal the conference's final state play-in berth.

The Grizzlies (8-16, 5-9), who will play at South Albany on Tuesday, clinched the postseason opportunity based on their record against teams in the MWL in descending order.
