Ashland grapplers go 1-1

The Ashland High wrestling team defeated Brookings-Harbor and lost to Hidden Valley to place second in a nonconference three-way Wednesday at Hidden Valley High School in Grants Pass.

The Grizzlies beat Brookings-Harbor 36-24 and fell to Hidden Valley 60-16, and Hidden Valley beat Brookings-Harbor in the third match 72-10.

Ashland 120-pounder Niccolo Cellini went 2-0 on the day with a pair of pins. He defeated Tyler Torres of Brookings-Harbor in 1 minute, 23 seconds, and dispatched Riley Chancellor of Hidden Valley in 1:12.

In the 160-pound weight class, Ashland’s Jeremiah Sherrynewby pinned Hidden Valley’s Hudson Burgess in 3:34.

Southern Oregon University senior forward Autumn Durand was voted the Cascade Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season, the league announced Monday.

Durand, who hails from Onalaska, Washington, led the fourth-ranked Raiders to key victories over No. 17 Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho last week. 

Against Eastern Oregon, Durand scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds and drained all four of her first-half 3-point attempts. Against College of Idaho, Durand scored 18 points on 8 of 12 shooting, pulled down four rebounds and dished out four assists.

Durand is a leading contender for the CCC's Player of the Year award. Counting conference games only, she ranks first in scoring (17.6 points per game), second in shooting percentage (58.9), third in blocks (1.3), fifth in rebounding (6.9) and 12th in 3-point percentage (38.5).

The Raiders, who lost in the NAIA Division II national championship game last season, are 17-1 overall and 10-0 in league play.
