Pilots split twin bill with North Medford thanks to walk-off single

The Ashland Pilots opened Tuesday afternoon’s doubleheader at North Mountain Park in exciting fashion, allowing them to keep postseason hopes alive.

Ashland won the opener 4-3 on a walk-off single by second baseman Dane Reynolds that capped a late-game comeback and then fell 13-1 in six innings.

Ashland concludes its 2018 regualr-season schedule today at 3 p.m. with a home twin bill against the South Medford Colts.

Pilots third baseman Nick Buccino tied Game 1 at 3-all in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run home run to left field. Two innings later, a Luke Brown one-out double, Buccino’s intentional walk and a Nate Carter single loaded the bases for Reynolds, who knocked in Brown with a single to left-center to give Ashland the walk-off win.

Ean Lawrence picked up the win in the opener with an inning of scoreless relief out of the bullpen.

Pilots starting pitcher Bailey Hanks pitched well despite getting a no decision, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings of work.

North Medford — which improved to 20-15 overall and 13-9 in league play — scored all 13 of its runs in Game 2 after Ashland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when McLennan scored on a wild pitch.

Mavericks starting pitcher Gavin Schmidt threw a complete-game six-hitter in the nightcap, allowing just the one run and finished with nine strikeouts and one walk.
