The Grizzlies got back home and into the win column.
The Ashland High volleyball claimed its first win of the 2018 season in their home opener on Thursday night, as the Grizzlies claimed a four-set victory (25-19, 27-25, 18-25, 26-24) over Willamette in Midwestern League action at Mountain Avenue Gymnasium.
“I thought the girls did a really good job on defense tonight, being in the right position and minimizing our errors,” Ashland head coach Laura Morse said. “That was a big thing (in the season opener) against Crater (on Tuesday night) and a concentration for us tonight. Defense was the main thing for us tonight.”
Ashland (1-1 overall, 1-1 MWL) was led by junior setter Grace Angermeier, who recorded a game-high 37 assists and added 14 digs. The Grizzlies’ defensive specialist, senior Sydney Philpott, finished with a team-high 16 digs in the win.
Fellow senior Emily DeVall filled up the stat sheet on Thursday night, recording 16 kills, eight digs and a pair of aces. Jesse Crane added seven kills of her own, while Rosie Dean had four aces.
The big swing in the match came in the second set, one where Ashland led the entire way until Willamette rallied late to tie the score and then took a 25-24 lead.
Morse called timeout — and it proved to pay dividends.
Ashland tied it at 25-all, then took the next two points to take a 2-0 lead over Willamette.
“We were up the whole set and they came back with a five- or six point serving streak,” Morse said. “We had really good energy during the timeout and switched up the serve receive line a little bit. It was a close one, but the serve receive switch was the main thing at the end.”
The Grizzlies continue their lengthy homestand against league opposition on Tuesday night when Springfield makes the trip to Ashland, the second in a stretch of seven straight league matches at home.
