Balanced Lancers too much for Grizzlies

EUGENE — Four different Lancers scored in double figures as the Churchill boys basketball team led the entire way in a 78-47 win over Ashland on Friday night.

It was a completely different game compared to when the two teams met earlier this season, as Ashland nearly pulled off an upset against Churchill on Jan. 5 in Ashland.

The Lancers (13-5 overall, 5-3 Midwestern League), however, took command of the game early, leading 19-9 after the first quarter and 39-22 heading into halftime.

Isaiah Wallace finished with a game-high 18 points for Churchill. He also hit four of the Lancers’ eight 3-pointers.

Kaelen O’Neil added 17 points in the game, while Jonathan Nchekwube and Cole Wilkenson had 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Ashland'd Gabe Ekwall scored a team-high 13 points and hit a trio of 3-pointers in the loss. Anthony Swanson added 11, while Adam Jones had 10.

The Grizzlies, who fell to 5-13 on the season and 1-7 in league play, return to Mountain Avenue Gymnasium on Tuesday night when they host Thurston.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

CHURCHILL 50, ASHLAND 28: At Ashland, Ashland couldn’t rebound after a tough opening half and fell to Churchill in Midwestern League action on Friday night.

Neither team had a player finish in double figures, but the Lancers had five different players score at least six points.

Churchill (8-9, 5-3) also limited Ashland (3-15, 0-8) to just two points in the second quarter to build a 25-12 lead going into halftime.

Malia Rodriguez scored a team-high eight points for Ashland. Vita Witnauer had six points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Nina Munson had a team-high four steals.

Kalya Nesbitt finished with a game-high nine points for the Lancers, while Natalie Elstone added eight.

Ashland plays at Thurston on Tuesday night.

SWIMMING

In Eugene, it was a successful day in the pool for the Ashland High swimming teams, as the girls took first place and the boys finished in second in a three-way meet against Crater and North Eugene on Friday.

The Ashland girls finished with 131 total points, with North Eugene taking second and Crater coming in third.

The Ashland boys recorded 109 points, finishing just behind North Eugene’s 116-point day.

The Grizzlies were victorious in eight of the 11 events on the girls side, including seeing Alexandra Westrick knocking 10 seconds off her best time in the 200 meter free to claim the win.

Olivia McMonagle came in first in the 100 yard butterfly and 100 yard backstroke.

On the boys side, Chris Frownfelter continued his recent success in the 100 backstroke, finishing in first with a time of 58.33 seconds.

Ashland’s Baylor Wiggins claimed to wins in the 200 and 500 free.
