EUGENE — After a memorable first day of competition at the Class 5A state track meet thanks to sophomore EJ Holland, the rest of the Ashland High track team will go for more accolades today at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Besides Holland’s exploits, two other Ashland runners were in action on the first day of the two-day event. The Grizzlies’ top runner in the 3,000 on the girls side, Hazel Richards, finished ninth with a time of 10 minutes, 44.99 seconds, while Ian Rinefort recorded the top qualifying time (50.48 seconds) in the 400.
The rest of Ahsland’s contingent at the state track meet will get things underway today when the bulk of the events take place.
Rinefort, a senior, will probably be the busiest of the Grizzlies’ group of athletes throughout the day.
With his advancement in the 200, Rinefort will be participating in three different events today — the 200, 4x400 relay and the pole vault.
Holland will also be a part of the Grizzlies’ four-man relay team with Rinefort, while also competing in the 1,500 along with teammates Arlo Davis and Alex Franklin.
Franklin will also compete in the 800.
Sage Reddish will be Ashland’s representative in the girls 1,500 race, while Lili Smith will look to improve upon her sixth-place finish at last year’s state in the girls shot put.
