Holland dominates State of Jefferson again

For the third straight year, the boys’ record fell at the State of Jefferson cross country meet at Lithia Park on Saturday.

For the second consecutive year, Ashland’s EJ Holland did the honors.

Holland, a junior, broke the record he set last year with a time of 15 minutes, 14.07 seconds over the 5,000-meter course. He won by nearly a minute, with teammate Arlo Davis placing second in 16:10.41.

The pair helped the Grizzlies to the team title over 11 other schools. Ashland scored 32 points, and runner-up North Medford had 50.

Holland previously snatched the record from Crater standout Andy Monroe with a time of 15:28.97 last year. It bettered Monroe’s time of 2016 by nearly seven-plus seconds.

Holland owns the state’s fastest time by 20 seconds. He clocked 14:59.2 in the Northwest Classic two weeks ago.

North Medford’s Jacob Allmaras placed third in 16:26.34, and Reed Pryor gave Ashland three in the top four with a 17:07.28 time.

Ashland also captured the girls crown, with Alexa Hague (20:06.15), Sage Reddish (20:39.43) and Hazel Richards (21:06.45) finishing second, third and fourth, respectively.

The Grizzlies scored 30 points to runner-up Foresthill’s 61.

Phoenix’s Sophia Stubblefield cracked the top five with a time of 21:08.95, and teammate Lupita Alegria was next in 21:11.24.
