Tough first quarter dooms Grizzlies in loss to Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — Digging itself an early hole, the Ashland boys basketball team trailed by double digits early on and eventually lost 63-44 on the road against Springfield in Midwestern League action on Friday night.

Springfield junior wing Zach Brown scored 19 of his game-high 32 points in the first half. Of those 19 first-half points, nine of them came from the free throw line.

Jordan Carrillo was the only other Miller to score in double figures with 14 points.

Springfield, which improved to 15-5 overall and 8-2 in the MWL with the win, built itself a 17-2 lead after the first quarter. Ashland didn't score a field goal in the opening period, getting its only points of the quarter on two KJ Pippa free throws.

Pippa and Anthony Swanson both scored a team-high 12 points for the Grizzlies (5-15 overall, 1-9 MWL) in the loss. Lowell Saulsbury added eight points, while Joseph Wallner-Sentle had seven.

Ashland returns home to Mountain Avenue Gymnasium on Tuesday night when it faces Eagle Point for a 7:45 p.m. contest.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

SPRINGFIELD 56, ASHLAND 24: At Ashland, the Springfield girls basketball team continued its winning ways as the Millers claimed a 56-24 win over Ashland at Mountain Avenue Gymnasium on Friday night.

Cielo Gonzalez scored a game-high 24 points for Springfield, which led 14-4 after the first quarter and 20-13 at halftime.

The Millers (18-2, 9-1) outscored the Grizzlies 22-7 in the third quarter to pull away for good.

Jayd Sollinger scored a team-high 10 points and hit both of the Grizzlies' 3-pointers in the game.

Ashland (3-17, 0-10) return to the court on Tuesday night when it plays at home at 6 p.m. against Eagle Point, a game that kicks off a stretch of three out of four games at Mountain Avenue Gym to close out the regular season.
