Grizzlies split first two games at Bend softball tourney

Junior third baseman Rose Marston continued her hot start as the Ashland High softball team split a pair of nonconference games at the Central Oregon Softball Showcase Monday in Bend.

The Grizzlies started off with an 8-7 win over Bend, then suffered a 9-1 setback to Lincoln, snapping Ashland's first two-game winning streak of the season.

The Grizzlies (2-4) scored five runs on three hits in the sixth inning to overcome a 7-2 deficit against the Lava Bears. Pitcher Nicole Lehman and Kaylin McAnany both delivered RBI singles in the rally.

Lehman, a sophomore, went the distance to pick up the win and improve to 2-0 on the season. She struck out three and walked four.

Marston was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while McAnany was 2-for-4 and also had an RBI and a run scored.

Against Lincoln, Ashland shot itself in the foot by committing five errors, leading to five unearned runs for the Class 6A Cardinals.

"That's kind of been an issue that we're trying to correct right now," Ashland head coach Jeff Turner said of the defensive struggles.

Sophomore pitcher Savannah Williams pitched all six innings for the Grizzlies. She struck out five, walked five and allowed four earned runs.

Marston was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Grizzlies against Lincoln.
