Laney sets meet mark in 10,000

Southern Oregon University's David Laney set a new Cascade Conference Championship record with his victory in the 10,000-meters during Day 1 of the conference track and field championships Thursday night at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

Laney finished the race in 31:18.95, the fourth-best time in SOU history.

SOU's Kristen Juveland finished fifth in the women's 10,000 in a time of 40:54.89.

In the first day of the heptathlon, SOU's Rosie Converse sits in second place with 3,338 points. College of Idaho's Emily McCutchan leads the event with 3,670 points. Converse's day was highlighted by winning the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 11.75 inches.

In the decathlon, SOU's Alex Waroff sits in fourth place with 5,745 points.

Day 2 of the championships gets underway today at 4 p.m.
