SOU men’s soccer openers moved to Menlo due to air quality

Persistently poor air quality in the Rogue Valley forced school officials to make a preemptive decision regarding next weekend’s Southern Oregon University men’s soccer games, moving them from Raider Stadium to the Menlo College campus in Atherton, Calif.

SOU was originally scheduled to host a four-game, season-opening event on Friday and Saturday that included The Master’s (Calif.), Menlo and Northwest Christian. The Raiders’ opponents will remain the same: They’ll play Menlo at 2:30 p.m. Friday and The Master’s at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Raiders, who were last year’s Cascade Conference regular-season and tournament champions, will debut at home Sept. 1 against William Jessup (Calif.).

SOU volleyball earns CCC weekly honors

Southern Oregon junior right-side hitter Taylor Ristvedt has been selected as the Cascade Conference’s Read Lion volleyball Attacker of the Week, while the Raiders were named the “Under Armour Team of the Week” for August 13-29, the conference office has announced.

Ristvedt, a Portland native, led the Raiders to a 4-0 start at the William Jessup Invitational in Rocklin, Calif., last Thursday and Friday. Over four games, all of which straight-set sweeps by SOU, Ristvedt recorded 35 kills, 29 of which coming before she committed her first error.

She finished with only two errors in the four-team tournament, hitting .541.

SOU (4-0 overall), picked to finish second in the CCC preseason poll and ranked No. 13 in the NAIA preseason poll, surpassed the .300 mark for hitting in all four games for the first time since 2009 while holding their opponents to a combined .012.

The Raiders will officially open Lithia Motors Pavilion this Friday night at 7 p.m. against Lewis-Clark State.
