SOU moves up to No. 2 in national rankings

After spending three weeks in the same position, Southern Oregon University jumped one spot to No. 2 in Monday's latest NAIA Top 25 football coaches' poll.

During their bye week, the Raiders (4-0 overall) benefited from top-ranked Saints Francis (Ind.)'s 37-28 home loss to Marian (Ind.). SOU moved up, Saint Francis fell to No. 5, and Marian earned a three-spot hike to No. 3.

Morningside (Iowa) took over the top spot with 13 of 16 first-place votes. SOU received two first-place votes for the first time this year, and Marian got the other.

The Raiders were last in the No. 2 position in the 2016 preseason poll.

They'll travel this Saturday to Rocky Mountain (Mont.), which also moved up after its bye, two spots to No. 21. Montana Western went from 24th to 22nd and Montana Tech stayed at No. 20.

Men's Soccer

GARCIA EARNS WEEKLY CCC HONORS: For the second week in a row, the Southern Oregon men's soccer team produced the Cascade Conference's Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week — this time Gonzalo Garcia, a junior from Stockton, Calif.

Garcia was a key player on the back line as the Raiders turned in two more clean sheets, 2-0 on Saturday against Northwest Christian and 0-0 on Sunday against No. 18-ranked Corban. He also assisted Noah Addie's 57th-minute header that turned into the game-winner against NCU, his team-leading fourth assist of the season.

The Raiders (8-2-1 overall, 5-0-1 CCC) extended their team-record unbeaten streak to nine games, seven of which have been shutouts. They remained tied in first place with Corban, becoming the first team to blank the Warriors this season.

This week, they'll play Friday at Multnomah and Saturday at Warner Pacific.
