SOU needs weekend sweep to stay alive

It's do or die time for the Southern Oregon men's basketball team as the Raiders enter the final weekend of Cascade Conference play.

The Raiders (11-14, 3-13 Cascade) travel to Warner Pacific (19-7, 11-5) Friday and Concordia (15-12, 5-11) Saturday, needing to win both games for a chance at the playoffs.

Concordia and College of Idaho (9-14, 5-11) are tied for the final two playoff spots, with SOU two games back. Concordia finishes with SOU and Oregon Tech, while College of Idaho wraps up the season at home against Northwest and Evergreen State.

Southern Oregon fell to Warner Pacific (78-75) and Concordia (81-64) earlier in the year in Ashland.

The Raiders have dropped four-straight games as they head into the final weekend.

In last Saturday's setback to Oregon Tech, the Raiders got a career-game out of junior Armani Jackson. Jackson scored a career-best 18 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Southern Oregon will close out the 2009-10 season with three players scoring in double-digits. Senior Ryan Staker leads the trio with 12.4 points and 5.8 rebounds. Jarrad Childs is averaging 12.1 points and Humphrey Jackson is averaging 11.3 points.

Southern Oregon's up-and-down regular season is about to come to an end, but not before one last crucial road trip north.

The Raiders (18-9, 7-9) travel to Warner Pacific (16-9, 11-5) Friday night and Concordia (12-14, 6-10) Saturday night needing one win or an Evergreen State loss to clinch SOU's fourth-straight berth in the conference tournament.

Evergreen State plays at first-place College of Idaho and second place Eastern Oregon.

If the Raiders wrap up the tournament spot, the next business at hand with the be the seeding and the Raiders can end up anywhere from fifth to eighth in the postseason tourney. All those seeds will mean life on the road for the Raiders.

Oregon Tech is currently in the No. 5 spot with an 8-8 conference mark. SOU is sixth, a game back of the Owls. Corban is in seventh, a half-game back of SOU and Concordia is eighth, a game back of SOU.

This weekend will also feature the last two regular season games in a record-breaking career for senior Jacki Speer.

Speer broke school's single-season rebound record last week and now has 381 rebounds on the season. With that record, Speer has now broken six career or single-season SOU records.

Speer needs 80 points to break SOU Hall of Famer Melissa Bogh's career scoring record of 1,865 points. At her current rate of 20.8 points per game, Speer would need the Raiders to play two games in the conference postseason tournament to break it. Speer also needs four blocks to move past Denise Berry's 123 blocks for second on the school's career block list.

Senior Ashley Baker has made her way onto SOU's career rebounding list. Baker now ranks ninth all-time with 589 rebounds.

The opening round of the Cascade Conference Tournament will be played next Tuesday.
