ASHLAND — College of Idaho pitcher Colette Robert got Southern Oregon off to a bad start in the Cascade Conference with a one-hitter in Game 1 of their series Sunday at University field. In Game 2, however, freshman third baseman Katrina Winterburn made sure it didn't get any worse for the Raiders.
After sustaining a 2-0 loss in the opener, Winterburn went 3-for-4 with a two-run double in the fourth and a walk-off single in the eighth to give the No. 3 Raiders a 5-4 win and a CCC-opening split.
The Yotes (10-3 overall) and SOU (14-6) will play two more today — a CCC counter at 11 a.m. and a nonleague counter to follow.
Robert (7-1), a junior lefty, kept the Raiders hitless until Olivia Mackey's two-out single in the fifth, striking out two with one walk in her seventh consecutive complete game. She got the only run she needed in the top of the fifth, when Kylie Smith sliced a single into right-center to score Kristin Paulazzo, who had reached on an infield single and moved into scoring position on a groundout.
Delaney Atkins added C of I's second run with her second home run of the season in the sixth, a bomb to left that squeezed just inside the foul pole. It was one of six hits off SOU starter Gabby Sandoval, who struck out five and walked two over seven frames.
Sandoval (8-3) got the Game 2 win in relief by recording the final five outs. She came on with SOU up 4-2, one out, and runners on second and third in the seventh following a Jordan Maddox double. She induced an Atkins popup before Marissa Maddox blooped a two-run single that found the outfield grass in left to force extras.
Karlee Coughlin started the bottom of the eighth with a lined double to the gap in right-center. Her pinch-runner, Davalin Ontiveros, moved to third on a passed ball and Winterburn finished the deal with a shot to left.
SOU trailed 2-1 when Winterburn, with two outs in the fourth, drove a go-ahead double to the wall in center field. Avery Morehead-Hutsell made it 4-2 in the fifth with a bloop single that plated Olivia Mackey, who led off with a single and a stolen base.
The Yotes out-hit the Raiders 15-8 in the second game. Jordan Maddox went 3-for-4. With no one out and the bases loaded in the third, she hit a shot to the outfield that dropped and scored two, but the rally died on the same play as the third baserunner was tagged out in a rundown and Maddox was called out for crossing paths with another runner.
Atkins, Smith, Paulazzo Marissa Maddox and Lacie Miller added two hits apiece for the Yotes. Robert took the loss in relief after working a perfect seventh but failing to record an out in the eighth.
