Despite one of their best single-game offensive showings of the summer season Monday night, the Ashland Pilots came up short in a doubleheader against Central Point, falling 14-11 in the opening game before losing 18-2 in five innings at North Mountain Park.
The Pilots recorded 13 hits and jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings in the opener — including Evan McLennan’s three-run second-inning home run — but were unable to hold on as Central Point scored four runs in the third, fourth and sixth to take the lead for good.
Five different Pilots batters had multi-hit games in the opener, led by McLennan going 3-for-4 with his home run and 4 RBIs. Rowan Amann, Eli Westrick, Dane Reynolds and Connor Gilliland all finished with two hits in the loss. Amann and Reynolds each drove in two runs apiece.
Central Points Nos. 2, 3 and 4 hitters — Andy Lacey, Blake Hollingsworth and Garrett Dance — combined to drive in nine of their team’s 14 opening-game runs.
Hollingsworth and Dance also had 3 RBIs in the nightcap, with the former also throwing four innings of four-hit ball while striking out nine to pick up the win.
Ashland returns to the field at 2:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader at North Medford.
