ASHLAND, Ore. — Graduation Day in Southern Oregon has seen students from Southern Oregon University (SOU), the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT), and Rogue Community College (RCC) take a big step into the future with the completion of their academic studies. Some may continue on a scholastic path, but most are now stepping out into the working world.
SOU Graduation In 98th Ceremony
In Ashland, graduates made their way across the stage at Raider Stadium as their families and friends cheered, as SOU held its 98th commencement ceremony on Saturday morning. This was the first real graduation for students coming from the pandemic era as many graduates also started their college careers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Over a thousand graduates received their degrees on Saturday. A newly minted graduate in business administration, Christopher Modrich, confirmed that after COVID, it was great to be out in person again, celebrating with everybody. Not just the graduates, for who the pandemic played havoc at their high school commencements, but honorary awards were also part of the ceremony.
A first-of-its-kind honorary doctorate was awarded to Sidney DeBoer, founder of Lithia Motors, who spoke to the graduates. DeBoer said, “It’s so important to exercise your weaknesses because you’re more lovable and care more for others.”
Southern Oregon Commencement Ceremonies
Rogue Community College in Grants Pass also held their graduation ceremony on Saturday at the Redwood Campus. The class of 2024, whose members had worked hard for this moment, celebrated with music and speakers on the day.
As they celebrated their perseverance and hard work, 723 students celebrated at OIT, including 152 graduates from the Portland-Metro Campus. The president of Hoffman Construction Company, Dave Drinkward, delivered the keynote presentation at the 76th commencement graduation ceremony. On the day, OIT also honored 4 retiring faculty members with emeritus status awards.
