Apple To Turn Oregon Trail Video Game Into An Action-Comedy Movie

Created in 1971, the “Oregon Trail video game reached cult status among American grade-schoolers by the 1990s. More recently, the game- one of the first educational computer games allowed in schools, will be developed into a movie by Apple.

 

‘Oregon Trail’ Video Game Being Developed Into A Movie

Famous for its hilariously dark storylines filled with broken arms, typhoid, and dysentery, ‘ Oregon Trail will be directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon while EGOT winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are producing and providing original music for the movie adaptation via their Ampersand production banner.

Apple landed the film pitch, but it is still in early development. The Hollywood Reporter reports that several original musical numbers in the vein of Barbie will be included in the movie version.

 

Development Of Oregon Trail Movie

The Lucas Bros. (represented by Fourth Wall Management, UTA, and Hansen Jacobson), who received an Oscar nomination for their screenplay for Judas and the Black Messiah, and Max Reisman (represented by Fourth Wall Management, UTA, and Jackoway Austen). are writing the screenplay about the game that spoofs 19th-century pioneer times as with characters aboard a covered wagon train heading west.

HarperCollins, who own the rights to the video game franchise are fielding Caroline Fraser to produce along with Kevin K. Vafi.

The producers and directors recently worked together on the Sony feature Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. Speck and Gordon (represented by CAA and Sloane Offer) also have Blades of Glory and Office Christmas Party in their CVs.

Pasek and Paul (represented by CAA, Kraft-Engel Management, and Schreck Rose) earned an Emmy for their song, “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” from last season’s ‘Only Murders in the Building’ recently.

It looks like the oxen and wagons  will soon be trundling along the ‘Oregon Trail.’
