Brookings Added To Prohibited Overnight Camping List

CURRY COUNTY, Ore. — Rule changes regarding overnight camping along the ocean shore within the city limits proposed by the Oregon State Parks And Recreation Commission (OPRD) have been adopted, and ocean shore camping in Brookings is now prohibited. This is the first update of the rules since OPRD added sections of Tillamook County in 2000.

Overnight Camping On Ocean Shore In Brookings Prohibited

Risks to public safety and health and impacts on the marine ecosystem along the ocean shore were raised as concerns by residents proposing the closure of oceanshore camping within the city limits.

A rule change was proposed following a petition from residents living near Mill Beach, Brookings. The OPRD confirmed that over 90 comments were received, 90% of which favored adding camping restrictions.

Camping overnight is already prohibited within city limits in Cannon Beach, Bandon, Gold Beach, Lincoln City, Manzanita, Newport, Rockaway Beach, and Seaside. Under different rules within OPRD’s division 30, camping overnight is also banned on sections of the ocean shore in Clatsop and Tillamook counties.

Park rangers are focusing on visitor education to reduce the impact on natural resources and ensure rule compliance. From December 1, the latest changes will be communicated to visitors on signage and other communications.
